Saturday 6/02/2012: An Evening in Savannah

Savannah was beautiful.  We actually flew to Raleigh-Durham, arriving after midnight, slept for a few hours in a motel, then drove 300 miles to Savannah.  On the surface our plan doesn't make a lot of sense, but it was the best way for us to use Southwest reward tickets we had.  Had we actually planned this trip in advance (instead of the week before) we could have flown to Charleston, SC.  But a few extra hours in the car with Nick on South Carolina's beautiful roads were just fine.

We found a place to park and started walking around the beautiful historic downtown area.  A bride stopped  her photo session to tell us we didn't need to pay the parking meter.
The pecan basket dessert is definitely worth stopping by to eat.  The basket is caramelized pecans.

We went to the Olde Pink House.  I thought it was a place to tour, but apparently Nick knew it was a find dining restaurant.  We were a tad under dressed, but lucked into sitting in the bank vault.  It's small, candlelit, and usually reserved weeks in advance.  There was just one small round table and the wine inside.  It's a very large restaurant, you could go there over and over again without getting so lucky.

Nick really liked his flounder, scored in a diamond pattern.

We stayed in a hotel right by the river.  We took the elevator downstairs and suddenly found ourselves at the heart of Savannah night life along the river.
We also went to a live musical review at the historic Savannah theater.
